| Here's a weird thought that crosses my bizarre mind sometimes: I look around at human beings and wonder about God's choices in making us in his image. Why are we, as a species, somewhere between 4' - 7' tall? Why are we in the 100-300 pound range? What if God had made us 50 feet tall, or 5" tall? Why did he pick what he did?
And the length of life? Used to be 900 years, now it's 80. Why did God pick that?
More importantly, I try to observe how people think, and what motivates them, and the choices they make. It's strange to think of us "in the image of God". What makes this (and please understand that I realize we're fallen and far from what God origianlly did) "the best that God could do" -- his very image? THIS is God's image?
I don't know. My mind is weird.
| Every time Adam has a health crisis such as this, it's impossible not to take stock of life and ponder how fragile it all is. It's not like I sit around morbidly thinking about death, but you can't help but think about that it's sure nothing to hang on to. Life is just an oar that we hold on to, and it gets us somewhere, but it's not the meaning of things. The meaning has to be something else. When i was in high school one of the kids in my youth group dropped dead in her school hallway from a brain aneurism. Here yesterday, gone today. One of my friends at school got hit by a car -- suddenly gone. It's weird -- just weird -- how quickly life can change. Life is like a ceramic pot. May look great, may be functional, may be sturdy, but it doesn't take much damage. One drop - bang. Just pieces. Makes you look around, that's for sure. | | |
| I read somewhere recently where it was saying that TV is still the dominant influence of all the visual media: computers, games, internet, movies. Y'know, that sort-a- surprises me. It seems to me that TV is just funny, or stupid, or good drama (shows like CSI, Grey's Anatomy), and reality shows, but an INFLUENCE??? Does TV really influence anyone? Are people affected by what they see? Do they run out and buy the fashions they see? Do they talk like the characters? Somebody help me here. | | |
| So i gave my presentation of my opinion about the flood last Sunday night. I thought it went well. Basically it comes down to what makes the most sense, given all the information. There are problems with every position. I'll be curious to hear the discussion after Al presents his position this Sunday.
But what really matters, when you come right down to it, is not what you think about the Flood, but whether or not you are following Jesus with all your heart. We can disagree about lots of different things, but this is one thing we DEFINITELY AGREE on, and it is the most important. And if you love Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and you are following Jesus with everything you are and have, then, frankly, your head & heart are in the right place. God's Kingdom and God's will are ALL that matter.
| This Sunday at youth group we're going to talk about Noah's Ark. Actually, the conversation is going to be about whether or not the flood was global. I'm one of those radical rebels, and don't believe that it was. I'll be presenting my case this Sunday night, and hopefully it will produce lots of good discussion. I like good discussion, rather than everybody (1) looking at their socks or (2) texting somebody or (3) whispering to the person next to them instead of saying their comment for the whole room to have a good discussion.
But I think the main issue with Noah's ark, or I should say, the Flood, is the discussion between Christians and others about whether or not the Bible is believable. Too many Christians have been taught that there's only one way to look at it, and it creates TREMENDOUS problems with science. It makes sense to get as close as possible to the truth, and we also want to keep the dialogue open with people who think and believe differently than we do. What we mostly want to avoid is being thought of as idiots, which is too often the stereotype of Christians.
So the discussion about the Flood is important because it's a connection point with our friends. You know, it's not like it's the biggest thing on their minds, but it's back there, and every once in a while something brings it out. It's not this big discussion issue, but it's usually high on their list of "Why I think the Bible is stupid."
